How I decide what actually makes the list

Hi, I'm Keitha! I'm not a scientist or a doctor, just someone who got tired of guessing and decided to actually dig in. Here's exactly how I do that, so you don't have to.

Solid

A meaningful step up from the everyday products most of us grew up using. The formula isn't perfect, there may still be an ingredient or two I'm not crazy about, but overall this is a good swap.

Better

This is where the ingredient profile gets stronger. There may still be something I'm not completely sold on, but overall, there are very few ingredients that give me pause and I'd feel comfortable making this part of my regular routine.

Top

These products check nearly every box. They have a very low concern ingredient profile, perform well, and make sense for the price. That doesn't mean they're magically perfect. It means that after looking at the ingredients, performance, and value, I think they're some of the strongest choices available.

What about price?

I'm going to look for good options across different budgets whenever I can, because not everyone has the same amount to spend on a bottle of shampoo or a tube of toothpaste.

Sometimes the more affordable option will be the one I'd recommend most. Sometimes the better formula really does cost more. And sometimes there just isn't a great lower cost option that meets my standards.

I'll always show you the actual price so you can decide what makes sense for you. I'm not going to call something a "budget pick" when it costs $50, or tell you that something is a "splurge" without telling you what it actually costs.

How I check

Here's what actually happens before something earns a spot here.

I start with a quick ingredient scan, usually through Yuka, Bobby, or Switch Natural. If it's MADE SAFE certified, that's already a strong signal on its own.

If something gets flagged, I don't just take the app's word for it. Scanning apps are a great starting point, but they don't always account for how much of an ingredient is actually in the product. Depending on the product, that might mean digging a little deeper into EWG Skin Deep, INCI Decoder, or the EPA's CompTox database.

Clean doesn't matter much if something doesn't work, so I also factor in real performance and not just what's missing from the label. If I haven't personally tested something, I dig into real reviews instead, and I'll always tell you which one it is.

What I won't do

I won't bump a rating up because a brand pays a better commission, and won't knock one down because it doesn't have an affiliate program at all. If my mind changes on something, the rating changes. Never the other way around.

Last thing

I’m not personally chasing perfection, and wouldn’t ask you to either. Nobody's home is 100% low-tox, including mine. I’ve found that letting go a little is better for my stress levels and sometimes convenience or budget wins. The Green Hue is here to help you make better calls where they actually matter, without giving you one more thing to feel guilty about.
